Jacksonisms

Feel me better
Jackson can get stuck in sad moods sometimes, but doesn’t seem to quite have the ability to understand why, or how to explain why he is upset.  He will often say he doesn’t know why he is sad when he’s in this kind of mood, but we try to talk through things so I can teach him about feelings and emotional vocabulary.  But he does often ask me to help him – he will say, “I want you to feel me better, Mommy.”  super. darn. cute.

Kids say the darndest things.
Driving along in the car recently, Jackson said “My penis itches; can you scratch it when we get home?”  I had to really work to not laugh at that one!

Discipline on the flip side.
Jackson loves to re-use my phrases on me.  One night, when I was putting him to  bed, he was trying to keep me in the room and delay bedtime as I was leaving, and he finally said “follow my directions please, Mommy.”  That one took me by surprise!  Another instance --- when he has a time out, I cue it with “Uh oh, looks like a time out for a couple of minutes.”  The other night, we had this conversation:

J: Uh oh, looks like a time out for Mommy.
Me: Really?  Why am I getting a time out?
J: I think you knocked something over.  Can you say you’re sorry?
Me: I don’t remember knocking anything over…but if I did, I am sorry if I did.
J: It’s ok.

I guess the good thing is that his tone of voice was always calm and caring, so hopefully that means I am doing a good job with avoiding frustration and anger and modeling positive discipline (thank you Love & Logic!!  more to come on that later…)

Introductions
Jackson loves to introduce people – sometimes he’ll introduce people that already know each other, but often he makes introductions at appropriate “greeting” moments as well.  He will say “This is my friend, Pappy” or “This is my Mommy.”  So funny how he just picks these things up!  He is quite a social little gentleman.  Nothing like Mommy at all :)

Fast Food Fairy Tales
Jackson is convinced, and repeatedly refers to McDonald’s as “Old McDonalds.”  I used to correct him, but then I just gave up, because he is not switchin’ up his style.  The other night, we ate at Jack in the Box, and he referred to it as “Jack and the Beanstalk.”  Hilarious!
