Door Makeover

I really got an urge to paint the front door recently … white just isn’t my jam.  Since my shutters are black, I was thrilled to be able to paint the door the same!  After I looked at some inspiration pics online, I was eager to get goin’.

The “before”

Necessary supplies:  foam roller, brush, tray, sand block, satin black pre-mixed paint, and most importantly, ipod player on shuffle mix.

Taping off the round glass inset was a major PAIN in the bum.  Tedioussssssss like a mofo.

Here goes nothin’….. lookin’ shabby-tastic in my paint gear.

First coat                                                        Second coat

Third coat

Ugh… then all these shiny spots started showing up!  Brush strokes even where I wasn’t using a brush!  I think the white paint has markings/texture that are showing worse with the black paint.  Even though I sanded before I started.  Boo. :(  So after the third coat, I decided to let it dry and then decide later if I needed to do more work.  Yeppppp…. the marks still showed after dry!  So a week later, I pulled everything back out again, sanded a bit heavier, and put on coat #4.

Still freakin’ shiny spots and texture marks!  Urgh.  Oh well, I’m leaving it be for now and just trying to silence compulsive-inner-perfectionist-sharla and just deal with it.  The spots are the worst in bright, unnatural light.

Finished product – with flash enhancing the shiny spots! urgh

Flash off, but blurryyyyyyy.  Be gone, effin’ spots!

At any rate, I still prefer my imperfect black door over the white one.

Any paint savvy folks have tips for my inner perfectionist?

  2. Start with a couple of coats of flat black paint, let them dry, THEN cover over with the shiny stuff. That should help with the spots. Of course, this basically means you're starting all over again and putting on at least three more coats of paint. So, you may want to refer back to Amy Penny's post. OR just wear sunglasses when viewing your front door. :)
