Jackson’s had his iPhone turned iPod Touch since Christmas (but he’s been playing with my phone since he was around 1 yr old) – here are some of his favorite apps:
** click the icon image to see more info in iTunes **
Matches – He loves to play the matching games, and it’s simple to use. Three difficulty settings, and you can match letters, numbers, transportation vehicles, or animals.
Trucks!! – This one’s been on my iPhone and a favorite of Jackson’s since he was a wee one. It has saved me from many boredom-induced toddler meltdowns :) Prevention is key! It’s merely a handful of construction truck videos, with voiceovers about each truck. Genius.
Feed Me – A newer favorite, this game always results in tons of giggles. For each question, you are presented with multiple choice options of answers to feed to the monster…but a wrong answer results in a “BLECHHH!” and he spits it out. J actually loves to feed the monster the wrong answer, so I’m not sure it’s fulfilling the intended purpose, but he finds it highly entertaining nonetheless, and we usually both end up with some good laughs.
DoodleBuddy Premium – I think I got the premium version on sale, or for free…can’t remember! This is a drawing / doodling application, and has so many neat features. You can start with a blank backdrop, or a “scene”… add stickers (that make a fun sound when you insert them), or you can doodle over top of a picture in the photos album. Luckily J hasn’t learned how to draw a mustache on me yet :) But his favorite thing to do in this app is to start with a beach scene, and then add tons of cartoon spiders everywhere. Creepy but cute at the same time. :) I wish I could save one of the drawings, but he manages to delete them so quickly, I haven’t been able to. I did, however, see that he had somehow selected “email image” on one basic drawing, so I sent it to myself :)

Nick Jr A to Z with Moose & Zee – This one’s been around for us for a looonnnggggg time too. I totally adore Moose & Zee, so this one makes my list of faves too. Great for letter recognition and phonetics. You get a random letter of the alphabet with a scene including several items that start with the letter, and there are hidden capital and lower-case letters in the image…you just tap to find them all. This app probably held his attention for the longest (at earlier ages) than any others.
Another favorite is the basic iPod app – he loves to listen to music or watch videos (I used Handbrake to convert some of his favorite videos to iPhone format).
And, a disclaimer … Jackson’s iPhone time is treated like any other screen time – with limitations and under supervision. Just didn’t want folks to think he’s a tiny little phone junkie :) Usually, he gets to choose between a TV show OR playing on the phone OR a computer game once in the evening, and that’s all, for now. :) He does get to use it some in the car, especially on long trips. And sometimes while out and about, if our excursion is beyond what his limited patience and attention span can handle. And I try, whenever possible, to make it an interactive experience for us, and not a completely independent activity on his own.
Up next … hopefully singing the praises of the Apple Composite AV Cable!
