rice & beans

I re-purposed the dry beans that came in a Goodwill mason jar find – Jackson lovvveeeeedddd playing with them!  I set him up with the beans, rice, several bowls, spoons, and scoopers.  He loved mixing, pretending to cook, and I could see he was simultaneously experimenting with mathematical and scientific principles of space and volume (and also making messes when the contents didn’t quite fit within the space of a particular bowl… haha), along with fine motor skills for pouring, scooping, etc.

All in all, it wasn’t too messy – pretty easy cleanup with a broom and all… and it was cleaning day anyway.  Unfortunately we did have one mishap though… one of the scoopers ended up giving him a bit of a pinch… a bug bandaid, ice pack, and a few hugs though and he was back to mixing!

the “cake” he made me --- made of “popcorn kernels and [my] picture, with candles.”  genius. :)  Review from the baker:  “it will be the yummiest cake you’ve ever eaten.”

He loved his bean/rice play time… and has been asking repeatedly to do it again.  Maybe when I’m in the mood for a popcorn cake…. haha!
