Jackson has taken swim classes at the YMCA on and off since he was a tiny baby (well, actually he was never a tiny baby, but all the same…). When the “terrible twos” hit their peak, and he seemed to resist following directions in swimming JUST BECAUSE, I decided to take a break. It was exhausting managing time outs, tantrums, and resistance with a 30 lb log of resistance wearing a soaking wet life jacket. just sayin’ :)
But, this summer Jackson has shown tremendous advancements and enjoyment with swimming and being in and around water, so we decided to switch from gymnastics back over to swimming, for now. He was really excited about starting swim classes, and did a really great job the first class. It was a bit of a bittersweet moment for me – I didn’t realize that he’s progressed into the class where parents don’t swim alongside the little ones, and we are also asked to sit outside the pool and watch through the glass on the upper level – one of those tangible, gosh my little guy is growing up moments. :)
Here are some pictures from the first class:
Sooooo excited, he insisted on wearing his float vest around the house the whole morning!
sitting on the sidelines & practicing kicking with feet
swimming with the teacher
being bored on the sidelines, he often became distracted and strayed from following directions… here he’s leading the neighboring boy down the same misbehaving path :)
Swimming along the side
He had a blast the first class, for sure! The second class, he was in a bit of a “funk” and refused to participate at all, so we watched from the sidelines. I’m hoping he’ll be more cooperative with participating by the time the next class rolls around. :)
Just for fun …. here’s a picture from J at one of his early swim classes (9 months old). what a cutie water baby!
